Completed project

Sandra Schultz’s dissertation project, which was completed in 2016, investigated the production of paper – the key precondition for the establishment of paper use. The first part of her study approaches paper production from a material standpoint. It asks which traces in or on paper point to the production process. At the heart of the second part lays the founding of paper mills in Basel where the art of paper-making was adopted from Italy in the 15th century. The case study on Basel is embedded in an overall presentation of early Southwest German mill areas. The focus lies especially on aspects of social and economic history of papermaking. This study was published in July 2018 in the series “Materiale Textkulturen”
